CHRISTMAS Although only one of our children is Christian, we like to celebrate this festival in some way each year, in fact in 2018 we had a Japanese Buddhist monk take a major role, and in his opening address he told the children that although this was actually Jesus' birthday, Buddha loved Jesus too, so we could all celebrate together. The fact that most people at the party were Hindu didn't seem to matter at all, we all enjoyed ourselves, especially the children. At this particular party we also had visitors from Finland and Australia, so it was quite an international event.
When possible, we have one of older children dressed up as Father Christmas to hand out the children's gifts.
HALLOWEEN Sometimes, Halloween coincides with a school holiday when the children are back in their local villages, but if it happens when they are in the hostel, they celebrate by by making faces on pumpkins, then lighting them with candles at night.
They also really enjoy scooping out the seeds and nothing goes to waste as the seeds are roasted as a snack.
GAURI SCHOOL'S 31st BIRTHDAY A big day in Gauri School's calendar is its birthday. Originally there was no school for this village, but Mrs Gauri Baral, whose husband had died soon after their marriage, was left childless so decided to give a plot of her land for a school to be built for the local children and she moved into a nunnery.
Apart from the long speeches made by notable visitors, presentations are made, songs are sung and dances are performed to much applause.
Here you can see the goings-on of the day, including the Headmaster, pictured in front of the mountains so you can see what a splendid view the children have. Also pictured is the Head of Kaski 22 District, who honoured us with his presence and opened the day.
Also pictured are our two Hostel teachers who were awarded certificates for their dedication to their work.
HEADMASTER'S SON'S WEDDING In 2017 all the children were invited to the wedding of the headmaster's son. This took place in the local village and in these few photos you will get a feel for the atmosphere.
